Reading for Pleasure

At St. Ann's, our wish is for all children to leave as competent readers, who share their teachers' love of reading.  In order to support our children in learning to love reading as much as the staff do, we dedicate the final half hour of our day, to simply enjoying books.  These sessions offer an opportunity for teachers to model fluent, enthusiastic reading of stories and, where possible, we love the children to join in too. We hope when you visit our school, you can see how valued reading is.

Reading Trolley

In fairer weather, we wheel our our book trolley onto the playground for children to use at playtime.  We have a range of books and some picnic blankets so that children can sit, read and engage in conversation about books.

Reading Ambassadors

Each year, Year 5 and 6 children are given the opportunity to apply to be a reading ambassador.  These children model good reading habits all year round, and work in the library, supporting the other children children when they come into the library.  They play a vital role in inspiring future readers by making it a welcoming space for everyone to find new books and authors and supporting them in choosing books that they will enjoy.

Snuggle up Books

Your child will also bring home 'Snuggle Up' books. These books are sent home to encourage children to snuggle up with you and a favourite cuddly toy and simply enjoy sharing a story.  These books are not matched to your child's reading ability. The aim is for you to read the story to your child or for them to use the pictures to help tell the story in their own words.  Your child may also choose to read or retell the story to siblings, family members or even their favourite cuddly toys throughout the week.

Book Fair and Book Bus

We host a book fair twice a year, and the book bus visits us annually, giving children the opportunity to discover new authors, explore different genres and choose books that inspire a love of reading for pleasure.
